“I had been searching for distinct volcanic vineyards to make fine wine and I found no better place than Etna!”

The Azienda agricola SCIARA is located in Contrada Taccione, Randazzo, on the north side of Mount Etna. Guided by Stef Yim, born in the Far East and raised in California, where
he was struck by a passion for wine.

The surface area of the estate is approximately 5 hectares, of which few are old vines of Grenache and Nerello Mascalese (some 100+ years) in the classic free-standing alberello training system, and younger vines of Pinot Noir and Nerello Mascalese planted into modern rows. Then there’s also a small percentage of cultivated local white varieties such as Carricante, Catarratto, and Minella Bianca.

In the winery, fermentations are spontaneous, with minimal intervention and meticulous care for a healthy environment. For refinement and aging, the experimentation with the various aging containers is used: including fiberglass, Tuscan amphora, concrete, ceramic, and barriques.

Stef’s wines are born of black soil and volcanic sand and express themselves with great elegance and freshness in facets that veer around red fruits, subsoil, puffs of Mediterranean herbs, slate, and iron notes. Mostly coming from single vineyards, by altitude! As a matter of fact, Stef has one of the highest vineyards in Europe… one hectare located in Contrada Cielo (Sky district) at 1500 m a.s.l. A truly bucolic name, isn’t it?

In Stef’s work, you can catch the willingness to discover and create, seeking a deeper connection with ‘A Muntagna’ which translates into the wines of absolutely unique character.
